I’m a music person!
Beautiful music does things to my mood: sad, happy, in love, heartbroken. Whatever situation I am going through, music surely uplifts me!
When I go to the gym, it is music that gets me through my time there, because if it were up to just me, I will rather be asleep cosied up under my duvet.
One day, I misplaced the charging cord for my headphone and no other cord could charge it so obviously the headphone’s battery died. I tried everything but the headphone was like no ma’am!
The next day I reluctantly went to the gym without my headphone but with earbuds. For reasons best known to it the earbuds refused to function, so I had to work out without my carefully curated music!
I had to make do with music from the gym!
My dears… it was a horrible experience!
It turns out my headphone wasn’t just providing music, apparently, it was also blocking out all the noise in and around me at the gym. Thereby making me focus on the reason why I was there: fitness!
I’ve got a short attention span so I get easily distracted, because of this working out without my headphone proved more difficult than I had envisaged.
Instead of doing 30min on the treadmill, I could only do 20min, because the noise from my running feet was such a distraction (something I didn’t even know was noisy before).
I also did 10 min on the cross trainer instead of my usual 20min, because, again my tired moans and grunts were a distraction.
What’s my point?
When you want to achieve a set target or goal, you need to block out all distractions!
You must intentionally make an effort to block out the noise which is likely to cause distractions and derail you from achieving your goal.
I thought my headphone was providing me with just music. But it was doing more.
Most importantly, it was helping me focus on my workout so that I could achieve my desired results!
That’s why I felt so lost and disoriented in the gym without it.
And that’s what happens if we allow noises to creep into our work: we lose focus and are likely to not achieve what we set out to do.
It might not always require a 3rd party peripheral as was in my case; most at time you simply need to build up the mental fortitude to block our anything you consider as noise and distraction in your life especially in this age of remote working where focus is needed to achieve meaningful productivity; so as you read this do a retrospective; define what constitutes noise in your life and make a conscious effort to eliminate them; you will be glad you did!
So today all I’m saying is block out the noise!
It distracts, disorients and derails you from your goal!
