Writers Note : This is the first of the many blog posts I’m going to post about my trip to Zanzibar. Please do well to catch up with every single one of them. Happy reading! 😀
I’ve known about Zanzibar for sometime (as a keen travel enthusiast it’s my business to know)😀 . I knew it had beautiful beaches and had filed it away as one of those places I was likely to visit in the future (I had no sense of urgency to do it now now ).
All this changed when my childhood friend and ‘senior in travel’ Maud, went to Zanzibar in April, 2021. I couldn’t stop salivating over her snaps ! The videos and pictures were beautiful! Yes my girl Maud is beautiful but Zanzibar looked absolutely stunning and I just had to visit. I was definitely inspired! I was overcome by a deep sense of urgency to visit Zanzibar and for it to be sooner than later.
I’m a solo traveler at heart and don’t mind exploring a new country alone at all but something about Zanzibar told me I needed a travel partner or maybe because Maud traveled with her two other friends and it looked really fun , my mind was conditioned to traveling with someone.
I immediately manifested my Zanzibar travel plan by tweeting it (it’s worked for me for most of my trips. I tweet it to make it look real to me and I start working towards it ).
I tweeted it in April when I hadn’t traveled out for 2021 and then in May, I went to Turkey 🇹🇷, then to the USA 🇺🇸 and Mexico 🇲🇽 both in September. At this point my travel budget was non-existent because my funds were totally depleted! 😩
But I knew I wanted to go to Zanzibar before the end of 2021. Prior to my USA 🇺🇸 trip , I hit up my girl Olivia asking her to go on the Zanzibar trip with me. Olivia and I have been friends forever! She’s a cool chick and very level headed .
TRAVEL TIP : On a shared expense trip , trust me, you must be very very smart about who you choose to go on the trip with ! They can make your trip or ruin it !
Make sure you choose your partner(s) well : they must be reliable, honest , open minded , mature, sensible and have enough funds too.
Olivia wholeheartedly agreed to go on the trip with me and immediately wanted all the details i e time of trip , and everything that has got to do with expenses , I knew I had chosen right with my travel partner.
What I mean by I dream travel. Lol . 6:56am had to hit her up with let’s travel
My USA 🇺🇸 /Mexico trip bore a huge hole in my account and to be honest, I thought the Zanzibar one wasn’t going to happen (this made me very sad because here I was about to disappoint Olivia ). I think she even felt it because she kept asking, “are we sure we’re going on this trip?” 😂
But me, the eternal optimist told her we’re definitely going and it was definitely going to be in the second week of December for 8 + plus days so she should block her calendar for the trip . Lol .
Finally in the second week, I sent Olivia a Skyscanner link to buy her ticket because we were going to Zanzziibbaarr! And I will tell you this for free; as a traveler, tickets are the most expensive annoying things to buy especially if you’re flying from Africa ! I see all those cheap flights deals on secret flying app, some as low as $150 from Europe to America and I’m like these deals can never reach Africa because traveling within Africa is even more expensive than traveling out of Africa .
So this is how it came to be that on the 19th day of December 2021 the year of our Lord, a bright Sunday morning, we left Kotoka International Airport for Zanzibar via Ethiopian Airlines, transiting through Addis Ababa.
So yes, even though Zanzibar wasn’t on my travel plans for 2021 , my girl Maud’s snap inspired me to add it to my plans (just as I hope mine inspires you )and it turned out it to be the best decision ever because what an amazing time and experience I had with my girlfriend 💃
These two mamas were ready to take on. Zanziiiiibbbarrr
