Raise your hand if you have heard about Santorini.
Now raise your finger if you have seen all those beautiful white and blue dome and said to yourself God when? Haha
Yup this one
And this too
In 2018, I seriously believed someone at the Santorini Tourist Board or something decided they had to go hard or go home with the in your face advertisement!
On Instagram and twitter (where I am super active), there was a bombardment of beautiful pictures of Santorini featuring beautiful people doing beautiful things and basically telling you hey YOU NEED TO BE AT THIS PLACE! It’s the place to be!
Ok well, I caught the bug and put it on my bucket list for future traveling plans because I am a firm believer in putting things down and working towards it
“When you want something, all the Universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

One thing that works for me is having a bucket list. I write anything and everything that interests me (read tweet it) as a reminder and work towards it. So in 2018, with all those pictures of Santorini flying around, I tweeted it.

I started saving towards my summer vacation to the usual suspect; United Kingdom! But the universe said, “Hold on! We have something for you.” 🍾🎊
In August 2018, I realized I could actually cross Santorini off my bucket list! I was ecstatic!
My route on this trip was Accra- Amsterdam- Santorini- Amsterdam- United Kingdom- Accra. Yes, that was a pretty loaded trip but the main trip for me was Santorini. I was finally going to Santorini! Can you feel my excitement?
I Did a three-day layover in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is always a good idea and I also did a quick trip to the chilled city of Den Haag.

I flew direct from Amsterdam Schipol to Santorini, yes it was a little bit on the high side because
-
Because of the direct flight from Amsterdam to Santorini . Normally what people do is fly to Athens and take the 6hour ferry to Santorini but I wasn’t in the mood for that and
-
I purchased my tickets when I got to Amsterdam so short time frame (please don’t be like me , plan ahead so you don’t buy the ticket at a ridiculous price 😩
Got to Santorini very early in the morning on a Friday, I had the whole day to myself to sleep and just soak in the view from my hotel. I also kept pinching myself about finally being in Santorini in September! Haha!
I booked for the all-inclusive bus tour recommended by the hotel I stayed in because :
-
I was traveling solo and no way I was going to tour the island by myself, you would be bored to death !
2. An opportunity for me to make new friends and share in each other’s experience
3. It was less expensive and promised a fun experience
#ABTravelTip
if you’re traveling solo and want to get the maximum experience, do group tour’s.
You get an all round package and also get to mingle with other travelers

2. A tour of the ancient underground city of Akrotiri

Santorini is the perfect destination for history lovers and those interested in geology or volcanology… or just anyone that is curious about how it is possible for such beautiful settlements to exist on the edges of a dormant flooded volcano.
Akrotiri is a well-preserved Minoan settlement – wander around this area of archeological excavation and discover what an ancient Minoan settlement from around 4,500BC looks like. This settlement was well-preserved after being covered in volcanic ash and not discovered until the 19th century.
3. Go Wine Tasting at Santo wines
what nobody tells you is that Santorini is home to incredible wine .

4. Watch the Sunset
the really famous pictures you see often are from a place called Oia which is almost the most expensive part of the island and where the sunset viewing and post card pictures are taken.

5. Take instragrammable pictures 😄

Here’s my personal view on Santorini
Watching the sunset lasts for less than 30min and it’s all over. Yea, kinda underwhelming if you ask me but I had great company so it compensated for everything. The sunset watch at Oia was the last activity for the day and when we were done, the bus drove us back to our respective pick up points. Fortunately, my pick up point was right in front of my hotel so I just went in, had my shower and went straight to sleep because I was still coming to terms with some not too good news back at home and one of the people I met on the tour who is an American of Jamaican descent gave me some edibles 😉
This is where I let you know dear reader that I’m team solo travel 💯 but for Santorini, I would never advise anyone to go solo! Never! The whole place is curated for either couple travel or group of friends’travel. I am very happy in my own company but Santorini got me questioning myself and that’s why I have vowed to go back again and this time with the LOML! Yah I must do all the lovey dovey stuff with him! Haha.
I was scheduled to fly out on Monday evening so I spent major part of Monday just enjoying my hotel
and the views it had to offer, I’m all for the views!
Due to some changes in flight plans, I had to go to Zurich instead of Amsterdam which I paid dearly for
later ђ and from Zurich I connected to London.
Got questions ? Lemme try answer a few and if you have more, hit me up in the comments section :

Is Santorini worth the hype ? Yassss! so add to your bucket list dears. lol

Is it expensive ? depending on who is reading but all i can say is Greece has been on an economic recession forever and tourism is one of the major ways they are sustaining the economy so go figure baby. But as i always say, you can absolutely ball on budget ! Just do your research and dig deep. If you have the $ too then splurge on the experience
-
Which visa did i travel on ? Schengen ! Schengen visa gives you the opportunity to travel to 26 countries ! 1 visa ,26 countries, pure gold!

Where to stay ? Stay in Fira. less expensive . If you wanna flex hard, you can do one night in Oia to enjoy everything without jostling for space with all the tourists.
