Why Competition Is Good and How It Drives Personal Growth

Isn’t being competitive a bad trait to have ? Haven’t motivational speakers slammed competition as the root of envy and negative energy one needs to avoid? Well today using my monthly waxing experience, I’m here to tell you competition is good. Lol it’s so interesting the places…

I know, yes I know you will be thinking when has competition ever been good?

Isn’t being competitive a bad trait to have ? Haven’t motivational speakers slammed competition as the root of envy and negative energy one needs to avoid?

Well today using my monthly waxing experience, I’m here to tell you competition is good. Lol it’s so interesting the places or situations we get our aha moment.

Mine was splayed apart on the waxing table, getting my hoohaa waxed (I’m allergic to shaving because of bumps and in growth problems) so waxing is always the best way for me ! And yes! Its painful but gets the work done, so why not?!

Don’t worry, I’m not going to fill you with horrors of the graphic details, this post is very PG rated 😄.

I use a particular spa for my monthly waxing and for some time now, I have been assigned a particular therapist (let’s call her Mavis ). Mavis to the best of my knowledge was good at her job, I was satisfied with her output and didn’t have any cause to complain. Or so I thought till post lockdown .

After the lockdown, and weeks of not getting waxed , I was so excited when the President of Ghana opened up businesses for operation.

I went to my spa ready for the showdown! I had missed Mavis and was looking forward to her session.

Unfortunately, I was assigned to a new therapist, trust me I’m a creature of habit so I wasn’t the happiest customer but the receptionist assured me this new one was equally good.

I laid down on the table with attitude and some skepticism saying in my head who’s this one oo, she can’t be like my Mavis.

Loool.

Our elders say “if you haven’t gone to someone’s farm, you would be right to think you’re the best farmer in the world” and boy were they right !

The first swipe had me like wow she’s good !

Yes it was still painful, I still screamed but when she was done, I felt brand new like a day old baby !

I felt so shortchanged by Mavis and what she had been doing to me.

But I believe in consistency so in as much as I was impressed by Akorfa the new therapist, I wanted to be sure it wasn’t a fluke so the next month, I went back and it was a better experience then the third month and I was totally sold !

She was good ! Even better than Mavis .
At a point I was like Mavis who? She didn’t  even ring a bell in my memory. Lol ( yeah I’m not loyal but I don’t owe anyone loyalty) .

Four sessions later with Akorfa , I got reunited with Mavis, she was happy to see me, her regular customer but I wasn’t happy!

I wanted Akorfa and even behind the mask, Mavis could see my countenance drop .

We went inside, got down to business (literally 😃) and I mentioned the areas Akorfa did that she Mavis hadn’t bothered to ever do, I mean this wasn’t even to critique her work but when you have experienced the full package, you really don’t want to settle for less and rightly so .

Eh heh dear reader, this information gingered Mavis to go all out !
She went over and above ! And she kept asking if I was ok here and there, I was like a brand new customer to her and she waxed me sore like a plucked chicken!

Mavis was on fire and was eager to show me she got it too. Unfortunately my tender skin suffered but all for a good cause . 🤣

Do you know what that 20min experience taught me? Till about 4months ago, I had been very satisfied with Mavis sessions and thought it was the best till Akorfa came in. It made me realize I could have a better experience. If you are wondering what was happening? It was Monopoly!

Oftentimes we’re afraid of competition because we have monopoly over the market and are afraid of challenges that demand us to go out of our comfort zone.

Competition isn’t always a bad thing. There’s healthy competition and that’s what we must aim for .

As an entrepreneur, are you looking at ways you can be your own competition and give your clients a better experience?

If you’re in a relationship, have you tried accessing yourself and looking at ways you can be your own competition to benefit your partner and create a better relationship?

As an employer have you looked at ways you can be the most competitive employer in the market? Are you challenging yourself or satisfied with the mediocrity?

“Healthy competition is a good thing. It forces us to do our best while monopoly renders people complacent and satisfied with mediocrity”

— Abena Yalley

Now I can look forward to my waxing sessions because I’m assured of best experience with either Akorfa or Mavis .

My last waxing session taught me that competition is good, it breaks the cycle of monopoly!

Can we assess how competition can or has helped us in our personal and professional lives?

Let’s talk in the comments section.
